Private Colleges: FactFile

A snapshot of America's more than 1,700 private, nonprofit colleges and universities, Private Colleges: FactFile presents a data-based look at this robust sector of the nation's higher education system.  Private colleges enroll more than 5 million students in institutions that range from as few as 100 students to more than 45,000 students. 


This innovative website offers prospective students and their families concise, web-based and consumer-friendly information about the nation's private, nonproft colleges and universities in a common format.  U-CAN was developed and is maintained by NAICU and its participating member private colleges and universities.


NAICU annually conducts a number of surveys of member institutions designed to learn about the innovative and proactive nature of private, nonprofit colleges and universities.  Among the topics are tuition, affordability and cost cutting initiatives, and improving college attainment rates.

Consumer Tools

Over the past several years, the U.S. Department of Education has launched a suite of consumer information tools designed to enable informed decision-making at various stages in the college selection process.  NAICU provides links and analysis of these resources.

IPEDS Information

The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), is the core postsecondary education data collection program for the National Center for Education Statistics, a part of the Institute for Education Sciences within the U.S. Department of Education. NAICU developed this microsite to keep members apprised of issues affecting institutional data reporting and collection.
